SAN DIEGO – A 79-year-old man who was shot early Tuesday by an unknown assailant in a Bay Ho neighborhood parking lot has died, authorities said.
Officers were flagged down at about 5:15 a.m. by an employee at the McDonald’s restaurant at 4711 Mission Bay Drive in Pacific Beach, where they were directed inside the restaurant to a man with a gunshot wound to his upper torso, San Diego police Lt. Jud Campbell said.
Police on the scene began rendering first aid to the man. The victim was hospitalized soon thereafter and pronounced dead later in the day, Campbell said.
The victim told officers at the McDonald’s that he was shot at least once in a parking lot at 4455 Morena Blvd. and then drove himself about a mile to the restaurant.
“Officers began checking the area and located a scene here in the 4400 block of Morena Boulevard and we’re beginning to canvass looking for witnesses,” Campbell said. “Trying to gather evidence to figure out exactly what happened and what led up to the shooting.”
Preliminary information from police indicates that the suspect approached the man, who was sitting in car near his work, in a likely carjacking attempt. When the suspect did not surrender the vehicle, the suspect shot a single round through the car window. The victim then drove himself to McDonald’s to ask for help, Campbell said.
Investigators say the suspect may be a Hispanic man with a thin build, standing about 5-foot-7 and wearing a gray hoodie. No further description was provided about the man, who reportedly fled the area on foot.
Police have identified the victim, but information is not being released at this time pending family notificatio, Campbell said.
