SAN DIEGO — A teenager who was shot Monday afternoon in a drive-by shooting near an apartment complex in the Mount Hope area has died, police said.

SkyFOX was over the Island Gardens Apartments at 3570 J Street around 4:30 p.m., where first responders and onlookers were gathered in the area of the wounded teen who police say was shot in the groin. The victim was transported to a hospital, but at around 5:45 p.m., authorities confirmed the teen died from his injuries.

The San Diego Police Department Watch Commander initially reported the boy as a 14-year-old, but the homicide unit said it was too early to give an exact age.

“We still don’t have a complete positive identification, so I don’t want to confirm 14-year-old,” said Lt. Jud Campbell, of the San Diego Police Homicide Unit. “I will say it appears to be a teenager, but until we’ve gone a bit further into the investigation, I don’t wanna confirm that.”

There were few details about the shooter, but the SDPD believes the individual was driving a large grey vehicle, possibly a Toyota Tacoma.

“This is the first shooting that I’ve been in the proximity of since I’ve been here,” Mount Hope resident Greg Perello said. “There’s definitely homeless violence sometimes. Maybe it seems gang-related because it’s drug-related.”

Detectives could not say whether the victim’s family had been notified by Monday evening.
