VISTA, Calif. — A man was found killed in a driveway outside a Vista home late Sunday afternoon, sheriff’s officials said, and the investigation eventually led to a deadly police shootout in Escondido.

A 911 caller told the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department about the shooting around 5 p.m. Sunday at a home on Teelin Avenue and Indian Rock Road, just west of Santa Fe Avenue. When deputies arrived, they found the victim dead from a gunshot wound. He was identified as 42-year-old Florencio Rodriguez.

After a police chase across Escondido and Oceanside, the sheriff’s department said that a suspect in Rodriguez’s killing had been fatally shot by an officer. An officer was also wounded in the shootout.

Authorities said the Vista slaying was believed to be a planned attack and some kind of family dispute.

“This wasn’t an act of random violence. It was targeted, it was intentional,” a spokesperson said, referring to Rodriguez and the man later killed by police as “ex-family members.”
