SAN DIEGO -- A fire of unknown origin burned through about an acre's worth of dense vegetation in Tecolote Canyon Monday, sending a thick column of smoke over the area.
The blaze erupted shortly after 5 p.m. off Genesee Avenue, near Osler Street in Linda Vista, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. The fire did not cause any structural damage or injuries.
Ground crews and personnel aboard a water-dropping helicopter had the flames under control within about a half-hour, SDFRD spokesman Lee Swanson said. Police closed nearby traffic lanes to give emergency vehicles unfettered access to the fire site.

No homes were evacuated. What caused the fire was under investigation, although the record heat and dry conditions could have played a factor.
