Woman dies after water scooters collide in Carlsbad lagoon

CARLSBAD, Calif. — A woman died after two water scooters collided in Carlsbad Sunday afternoon, authorities said.

The crash happened around 4 p.m. at the Agua Hedionda Lagoon off Harrison Street. Carlsbad police said a 17-year-old male riding a personal watercraft crashed into another water scooter carrying a man and a woman.

Carlsbad Fire officials found the 39-year-old woman in critical condition when they arrived at the lagoon. First responders administered CPR before taking her to a hospital. The two other riders involved in the crash did not need medical attention.

Police said the woman was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The cause of the crash was under investigation. Neither drugs nor alcohol appeared to be involved in the crash, and authorities said the 17-year-old rider was cooperating with police.
