SAN DIEGO — Authorities released the name Thursday of a Clairemont man who died of apparent natural causes while surfing in La Jolla.

Passers-by found Stephen Fujii, 67, dead next to his surfboard on the shoreline of Calumet Park about 7:15 a.m. Wednesday, according to fire department officials and the county Medical Examiner’s Office.

Fujii appeared to have succumbed to some type of health problem, possibly a heart attack, authorities said. An official cause-of-death ruling was on hold pending completion of postmortem exams.
