IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. -- A stabbing suspect was found dead in an apparent suicide hours after barricading himself inside an Imperial Beach apartment as a SWAT unit stood outside.

The body of Aurelio Perez was discovered in an apartment in the 500 block of Florence Street near Cypress Avenue Sunday evening, according to sheriff's department spokeswoman Jan Caldwell.

Deputies were sent to the second-story residence after Perez allegedly stabbed his wife Sunday afternoon. She was taken to a hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Perez holed up inside the apartment and a sheriff's department SWAT team was summoned, according to sheriff's officials. Neighboring homes were evacuated and Calla and Cypress avenues were temporarily closed.

Deputies fired tear gas canisters and a flash bang grenade in attempts to flush Perez out of the unit, according to news reports. A robot affixed with a camera was later sent in and discovered the suspect's body.
