OCEANSIDE, Calif.  -- Hundreds hit the surf Labor Day morning for the 78th Annual Oceanside Pier Swim.

The event kicked off on the south side of the pier and ended on the north side.  Swimmers began diving in a little after 8:30 a.m. and had to swim one mile all the way around the pier in a clockwise direction.

Swimmers from all over the state came out for the event. The swim is done in waves by age group. Among those hitting the surf was a young man named Mark, who told Fox 5 News about his experience.

“The water was really nice. It has been a while since I’ve just swum straight out in the surf like that fast," Mark said. "Usually I’m just looking for waves, since I body surf and that was different.”

Each swimmer received a lanyard for participating during an awards ceremony after the swim.
