ESCONDIDO, Calif. — A house fire burned Thursday morning on the same North County block where a water main break flooded homes and a sinkhole swallowed a car earlier this week.

The fire broke out around 5 a.m. on Seventh Avenue near Center City Parkway in Escondido. Video from the scene showed smoke rising from behind a single-story home.

The flames started in a bedroom but did not spread far beyond a single room, Escondido Fire Department said. There was no immediate word on the extent of the damage.

Just two days prior, the same street flooded due to a water main break. Houses flooded and a sinkhole formed, with a parked car sliding into the gap. The vehicle was towed out of the sinkhole before becoming completely submerged, but multiple homes suffered significant flooding damage.

Marie Martinez said she was already staying in a hotel due to the flooding when she heard her house was in flames. “They called us and said, ‘Your house is on fire!'” she told reporters Thursday morning. “My whole bed is charred, done, gone.”

Martinez’s family will continue to stay in a hotel while they assess and repair damage from both events, she said.
