SAN DIEGO -- Investigators say the deaths of a man, woman and child, whose bodies were discovered Tuesday in a Rancho Penasquitos home, are the result of a murder-suicide.

Police found the bodies during a welfare check in the 9500 block of High Park Lane about 11:15 a.m., SDPD spokesman Humberto Hernandez said.

An investigator told Fox 5, a woman’s body was found on the first floor of the house and bodies of a man and child were found upstairs. All victims were shot in the upper half of their bodies and appeared to have been dead for a few days, authorities said.

With the help of the Medical Examiner, homicide detectives came to the conclusion that the man, who is only identified to be in his 50s, was the gunman.

The man apparently shot and killed the woman and child before killing himself, detectives said. Police are not sure how long the bodies were in the home before they were found.

Police say the woman was in her 40s and the child was 6 years old.

The victims' identities are known but will not be released until family members have been notified.
