SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Police Department was investigating a double homicide after a man and woman were found dead in a Torrey Highlands home Saturday.

Police were called around 10 p.m. Saturday to do a welfare check on a couple living at 7405 Via Rivera in the Torrey Highlands neighborhood after they were expected in San Francisco but did not arrive, worrying family members.

Police said they looked through a window at the residence and saw a body lying on the living room floor. Officers forced entry into the home and discovered the bodies of an Asian man and woman in their 50s with trauma to their upper bodies. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Homicide detectives were called to investigate the incident.

The victims’ home did not appear to be disturbed. No one else was located inside the residence, and neighbors said they didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary.

“We have a dog in the house that has a doggy door. She wasn’t barking last night at all,” neighbor Nick Palermino said.

Glen Gutierrez lives just doors away from the couple’s home and was shocked by the news of their death. Gutierrez said the victims tended to be relatively quiet and kept to themselves, and he couldn’t imagine anyone wanting to hurt them. “I’d wave at them, say hi, smile. Sometimes I see them working in the yard,” he said.

Neighborhood residents told FOX 5 they were disturbed by what happened in their community. “This doesn’t happen here,” resident Randy Aven said.

The tragic mystery left residents in this quiet suburban neighborhood saddened but on high alert. “We always feel safe here, so something like this happening — it just, it tears you up,” Aven said.

The identities of the victims were not being released pending confirmation by the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Anyone with information was asked to call the SDPD Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293.
