OCEANSIDE, Calif. – Police arrested 66-year-old Michael Newton Thursday for the murder of a man who was staying at his apartment in Oceanside.

A body was found Thursday in a third-floor apartment in Oceanside.

Officers went to a third-floor apartment in the 3200 block of Mission Cove Way around noon after receiving reports of a possible homicide. When they arrived, the found the body of a 41-year-old man  with severe injuries to his upper body.

Homicide detectives were called to the apartment and a short time later they arrested Newton who they said was the renter of the apartment.

“He had some blood on his body as well, and we don’t believe anyone at this point was attempting to give CPR,” said information officer Tom Bussey.

Police did not immediately release the name of the victim and did not speculate on a motive for the killing.

Residents said the complex is made up of low-income housing units. Some are designated for senior citizens.

“A lot of people are just concerned, shocked, scared. They’re surprised that something like this happened here especially at a senior home,” said resident Fernando Juarez.

Another resident, Cathy Dattilo, said they have had problems in the past with homeless people sneaking in and out of the building, but otherwise described it as quiet.

“That’s pretty upsetting. I’m sorry to hear that this has happened today,” Dattilo told FOX 5.

The police department’s Crimes Of Violence Unit is investigating.
