SAN DIEGO — One person is dead after a home burglary in the San Carlos neighborhood ended with a shooting Tuesday morning.

Police received a call about a burglary underway at 6382 Lakeshore Drive near Lake Murray around 6:20 a.m. According to police, the woman who reported the burglary said her husband was fighting the burglar and her 20-year-old son had shot the suspect.

Just before 7 a.m., police confirmed that the burglar had been fatally shot. The suspect, a 38-year-old white man, had run out of the house after he was shot.

“The suspect was in the backyard in the pool area with a gunshot wound to his upper body,”  Lt. Anthony Dupree with the San Diego Police Department said. “The suspect was pronounced deceased there at the scene.”

The homeowner was hospitalized with multiple upper body stab wounds but was in stable condition.

Police said the suspect was unknown to the family. Officers were investigating how the man was able to get on the property and into the house.

The names of the burglar and homeowners have not been released.
