RAINBOW, Calif. – A head-on collision on Old Highway 395 in North County killed one woman and sent two men in the hospital.

Shortly before 5 p.m. Saturday, a 45-year-old man from Quail Valley was driving his 1992 Nissan north of Rainbow Glen Road when his vehicle crossed over the double yellow line and collided head-on into a 2005 Volvo station wagon.

The 68-year-old female passenger riding in the Volvo was pronounced dead at the scene, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Jim Bettencourt. The woman was the driver’s wife, and he was from Fallbrook. according to Bettencourt.

The driver of the Volvo was taken to Palomar hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Bettencourt said the driver of the Nissan was airlifted to Palomar Hospital with major injuries. Authorities suspect the Quail Valley man may have been driving drunk.

Officials are asking any witnesses to this collision or anyone who observed the vehicles prior to the crash to call the Oceanside CHP office at (760) 643-3400 Monday through Friday during normal business hours.
