SAN DIEGO -- An 8-year-old girl being held in the lap of a wheelchair-bound pedestrian suffered a skull fracture when the two were struck by a Cadillac that ran a red light Thursday.

The female in the wheelchair was holding the child and crossing in a crosswalk at a green light when they were struck about 5:50 p.m. in the 5400 block of Imperial Avenue in Valencia Park, said San Diego police Officer Robert Heims.

The child fell and hit her head on the ground. She was taken to a hospital for treatment, he said.

The female who was holding her complained of pain to her knee, Heims said.

It was unclear if the 82-year-old woman driving the red Cadillac that hit the victims was cited or arrested.

The child was taken to Rady Children’s Hospital. She is expected to be released within the next two days, family members said.
