SAN DIEGO– A 2-inch gas line ruptured in Normal Heights Tuesday afternoon after a contractor hit it, utility officials said.

A San Diego Gas & Electric control crew went to the site located in the 4800 block of Hawley Boulevard around 12 p.m., according to City of San Diego spokesperson Alec Phillipp. Police were diverting traffic away from the area, Phillipp said.

SDG&E officials said San Diego Fire-Rescue Department ordered some evacuations as a precaution.

The area was within close proximity to a water main break that caused flooding in Normal Heights Monday morning.
