LA MESA, Calif. — The California Highway Patrol closed a freeway on-ramp in La Mesa Monday after a possible pipe bomb was found taped to a guard rail

The CHP closed the on-ramp from Grossmont Center Drive to eastbound Interstate 8 at about 10:25 a.m.

Investigators described the object two pipes with protruding wires taped together with duct tape. A team of sheriff’s bomb technicians used a remote-controlled robotic vehicle to examine the object, a CHP spokesperson said. The object turned out to be harmless, the CHP said.
