SAN DIEGO —  A man threatening to jump from an Interstate 805 overpass near Normal Heights caused traffic to back up Wednesday as authorities tried to talk him down.

The man was spotted on the Adams Avenue bridge over the freeway shortly before 9 a.m., San Diego police Officer Frank Cali said.

Authorities closed Adams Avenue in both directions between Ohio Street and Mountain View Drive, Cali said. All but one northbound and one southbound lane of Interstate 805 were closed.

Police crisis negotiators convinced the man to surrender at about 10:50 a.m. All lanes of the freeway reopened shortly after that.
