SAN DIEGO – Firefighters extinguished a dumpster fire early Saturday in City Heights.

Crews responded shortly after 1:30 a.m. to the blaze in the 5200 block of Wightman Street.

The fire that started in a dumpster outside an apartment complex caused approximately $1,000 in damage, officials said.

Dozens of people evacuated their apartments as flames started to go up the side of the building.

“My mom got buckets of water and neighbors got the fire extinguishers. They kind of controlled it by the time firefighters were here,” said Juliet Lama.

It’s the latest in a long string of suspicious fires in City Heights — at least 15 since the beginning of March.

The cause is undetermined. An investigation is underway.
