CHULA VISTA, Calif. – An elderly couple died when fire gutted their home in Chula Vista, authorities said.

Firefighters arrived at the burning house at 639 Claire Avenue at about 7:25 a.m. It took them about 20 minutes to knock down the blaze.

When they entered the single-story home, they found the bodies of Bud and Darlene Welker.  Bud Welker was 89 and his wife was also in her late 80s, neighbors said. The couple had lived in the home for decades and were known to everyone in the neighborhood..

 The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
