SAN DIEGO – A home was badly damaged in Hillcrest after catching fire Wednesday morning, the San Diego Fire Department said.

The single-story, bungalow-style home at 1817 University Avenue near Park Boulevard caught fire around 2:40 a.m. Firefighters arrived a few minutes later and knocked down the blaze in about 15 minutes.

Four engines were called to battle the blaze, firefighters said. The home was badly damaged and any contents not destroyed by the fire were damaged by smoke.

Firefighters have not been able to find the man living inside the home and neighbors believe he may be out of town.

No one was hurt and no other homes on the block were damaged. It was unclear what started the blaze.
