SAN DIEGO – A fire forced four children and an adult from their home in the mid-city area Thursday morning, the San Diego Fire Department said.

The blaze kicked up around 5:20 a.m. in the garage at the home at 4045 Winona Avenue just north of University Avenue in the Colina del Sol neighborhood.

The garage was being used as a bedroom. A neighbor noticed the flames and sprang into action, waking those inside the home and helping them get to safety.

Firefighters managed to knock the fire down around 5:45 a.m.

No one was hurt. Investigators were trying to determine what started the fire, though they believe it was an accident. The Red Cross was helping the children and adult find a place to stay.
