SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Investigators were trying to determine what sparked a fire that destroyed two vehicles and threatened several homes in unincorporated San Marcos early Monday.

The fire was reported just after midnight in the 2100 block of Esplendido Avenue. When firefighters arrived, the fire was raging though brush and trees. They had to lay hoses for quite a distance to get water to the fire, but once they began pouring water on the flames it took them less than an hour to bring the blaze under control.

Two vehicles were destroyed, but no homes burned. Firefighters said they were able to prevent structure damage because the homes in the area were surrounded by sufficient defensible space.
