SAN DIEGO — A 55-year-old man driving a FedEx big rig died Tuesday afternoon in a collision with a sedan on a highway in Otay Mesa West.

The crash happened around 2:30 p.m. on westbound State Route 905 at Picador Boulevard, just north of Beyer Boulevard.

A 30-year-old mother from San Diego was driving her 2013 Hyundai Elantra at an unknown speed when, for reasons still being investigated, she attempted to pass the big rig on the right, causing both drivers to lose control.

The big rig driver, a Chula Vista resident, veered to the left, drove through a metal bridge railing and landed on Picador Boulevard, which runs directly under SR-905. He was killed instantly.

The driver of the Hyundai, along with her husband and their four children — including an infant — collided in the bridge railing and ended up in the left lane. All of them escaped with no injuries.

No alcohol or drugs were suspected to be a factor in the collision, which is still under investigation.
