SAN DIEGO – A pedestrian was struck and killed by a passenger train Saturday near the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, midway between Old Town and downtown.

The 24 year-old man was struck by an Amtrak train about 3:00 p.m. at Pacific Highway at Washington Street, San Diego police Officer Jason Jarrells said. He died at the scene.

Witnesses said the victim got off the trolley and went to cross the tracks, but was unaware of the coming train.

“He was wearing his headphones. I blew my horn — he did not respond. Someone in the background yelled at him also. He barely lifted his head,” said Reno Torres, a passenger.

The North County Transit District subsequently cancelled its northbound Coaster train 689, and directed its passengers to take the trolley to the Old Town station to board northbound Coaster train 691.
