SAN MARCOS, Calif. – A San Marcos family was warning neighbors Monday of two dogs that attacked and killed their 20-year-old horse.

The horse named "Smokey" was attacked by two dogs who entered the corral Saturday night, according to family members.

The family is devastated by the loss of Smokey.

"It's was a really traumatic event for all of us – having to see our horse suffer and die, my dad is elderly and just lost my mom a year ago. It's the hardest on him. I think he's kind of in shock," said Michelle Barclay, one of Smokey's owners.

After smokey was attacked, two pitbulls were found near the property and taken to an animal hospital by an unidentified person because one of the dogs was bleeding, a microchip revealed where the dogs lived.

According to the San Diego Humane Society, when investigators showed up at the house, they were told the dogs had gotten out again accidentally.

Fox 5 went to the home and was told, by one of the owners, her dogs were not responsible and had been at the house all weekend.

Smokey's family says the dogs are a menace endangering other families and their animals.

"There's a lot of children around here, there's a school behind our house, if they can do that to a 1500-pound horse, they could certainly take down a child," said Barclay.
