CHULA VISTA, Calif. — A former Coronado Yacht Club commodore who molested a neighbor girl and another young girl was sentenced Wednesday to 10 years in state prison.

Thomas Garrett, 74, pleaded guilty to a pair of child molestation counts on Aug. 31, just before opening statements were to be delivered in his retrial.

Garrett, who is also a retired firefighter, was convicted in 2013 of molesting a 10-year-old girl who lived next door to him in Chula Vista.

In January 2014, a judge, citing jury misconduct, granted the defendant a new trial, and prosecutors subsequently added new charges involving a second girl, said Deputy District Attorney Harrison Kennedy.

Garrett worked for the San Diego Fire Department for 32 years, retiring in 1997 as a battalion chief.
