SAN DIEGO -- A building on the campus of San Diego City College was evacuated Monday afternoon while police investigated a suspicious package, which turned out to be harmless.

Police received a call around 1:20 p.m. about a possible explosive device in the A Building at the East Village campus.

It's unclear how or why the item -- several batteries taped together -- wound up in the structure, which houses administrative offices and counseling facilities.

The building and the school cafeteria, which also was closed due to the incident, will remain closed for the remainder of the day, a spokesman said. All other campus activities and facilities are unaffected.

No other locations were evacuated and classes resumed during the investigation, college staff added.
