Driver who ditched car after fatal South Bay crash sought

NATIONAL CITY, Calif. — Authorities sought Wednesday a hit-and-run driver who fatally struck a man changing a tire alongside a South Bay freeway, ditched the wrecked car and ran away.

The fatal crash occurred about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday in a center median on southbound Interstate 5 near Mile of Cars Way in National City, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The victim was changing the right front tire on his black Honda Civic when he was struck by a Dodge Stratus, CHP Officer Tony Contreras said. The victim died at the scene and his name has yet to be made public.

The Dodge struck the center divider wall and the driver got out and ran away, according to the officer. A description of the fugitive motorist was not immediately available.

Anyone with information on the crash or the whereabouts of the hit-and- run driver was asked to call the CHP at 858-637-3800.
