SAN DIEGO – Firefighters had to use the Jaws of Life to pry a young woman from her wrecked Prius after she crashed into a palm tree early  Monday, authorities said.

The woman was driving too fast when she lost control and crashed at Mission Bay Drive and Clairemont Drive at around 1:15 a.m. , police said. The Prius hit the tree so hard it flipped, though the car landed back on its wheels. Part of the car door dislodged from the vehicle and got stuck in the tree.

Firefighters cut the driver from the car,  and she was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. It was unknown if alcohol was involved.

The car sustained major front end damage during the crash.
