SAN DIEGO — A driver died Wednesday afternoon when a car veered off Interstate 5 into a grove of eucalyptus trees in University City, the California Highway Patrol said.

The accident happened at about 2:10 p.m. on northbound I-5 just south of Nobel Drive.

Helicopter video showed a mangled white 4-door sedan wedged between two trees. There were no visible skid marks leading from the roadway to the location of the wreck.

No traffic lanes were blocked, but traffic backed up because motorists slowed to look as they passed the accident.

The cause of the crash was under investigation.
