OCEANSIDE, Calif. — A 69-year-old motorist was killed in a solo vehicle crash off Interstate 5 near Camp Pendleton.

Nicholas Anthony Dicarlo of Carlsbad  lost control of his southbound 2014 Lexus IS 350 north of Harbor Drive Wednesday about 2:30 p.m., apparently due to a blown tire, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The sedan veered off the freeway and smashed head-on into a tree, CHP public affairs Officer Jim Bettencourt said.

Emergency crews had to pry the man out of the wreckage. Medics airlifted him to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, where he was pronounced dead about two hours after the crash.

The accident forced a several-hour closure of the southbound Interstate 5 off-ramp to Harbor Drive.
