SPRING VALLEY, Calif. — A man chasing a runaway dump truck was run over by the vehicle in Spring Valley Friday morning, and the truck went on to hit a gas line, authorities said.
San Miguel Fire Department and San Diego Gas & Electric crews went to the 8700 block of Valenica Street around 8 a.m. A man had gotten out of the truck when it started to roll away, officials explained. The driver tried to hop in and stop the vehicle, but he tripped and was run over by the truck. The man suffered serious injuries and was rushed to the hospital.
The truck kept rolling and hit a 3/4-inch gas riser, which connects to the meter box, causing a gas leak, San Diego Gas & Electric spokesman Wes Jones said.
Firefighters evacuated a dozen residences nearby and told several other residents nearby to shelter-in-place, San Miguel Fire & Rescue Battalion Chief Gehrig Browning said.
The orders were lifted about 10 minutes after the gas leak was capped at 9:20 a.m., Browning said. No ill effects from the vapors were immediately reported, he said.
