SAN DIEGO – A man was recovering Monday morning after crashing his SUV into a tree and a fire hydrant, according to the San Diego Fire Department.

The driver was heading south on Ruffin Road around 3:50 a.m. when he lost control of his Chevy Tahoe near the intersection of Kearny Villa Road, police said. The SUV ended up atop the hydrant at the corner of Ruffin and Waxie roads with water spraying the undercarriage and gushing into the street.

Workers with the San Diego Water Department were called to the scene to help shut off the broken valve.

The driver sustained minor injuries in the crash and was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital, San Diego fire said.

Traffic was unaffected in the area. It was not yet clear how fast the driver was going or if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.
