SAN DIEGO — More than $21,000 had been donated as of Thursday morning for two young boys whose mother was gunned down at their Lake Murray-area apartment.

Vanessa Marie Bobo, 29, was fatally shot, allegedly by live-in boyfriend Roderick Lamar Harris, during a quarrel at the couple’s apartment in the 6400 block of Lake Arrowhead Drive early Wednesday, according to San Diego police. Bobo died at the scene.

The 29-year-old victim was the mother of the suspect’s one-year-old son and a 5-year-old boy from a prior relationship, according to police. The Little Rock, Arkansas native attended Cal State Los Angeles on a track and field scholarship, family members said.

San Diego police homicide Lt. Manny Del Toro said the boys were present when the shooting occurred, and authorities believe the 5-year-old witnessed his mother being killed. Patrol officers found them traumatized, but unharmed.

The fact that the victim’s sons were present at their mother’s violent death “definitely pulled on the heartstrings of the officers involved,” Del Toro told reporters during briefing Wednesday afternoon.

Harris remained at large for nearly 12 hours before being arrested at a relative’s home in Chula Vista. The 32-year-old suspect was taken to a hospital to be treated for minor cuts he sustained before officers arrived, police said. Harris is being guarded at the hospital by officers, and has not yet been charged.

Bobo is survived by her parents, Brady and Maria Bobo, sisters Latoiya Robinson, Brandi Baker and Beverly Pridgen Howard, and sons Bruce Tone III and Brady Gatlin Harris, according to a GoFundMe page raising money for her children and to help with funeral expenses. Funeral plans have yet to be announced.

Donations will also help with the Bobo’s funeral expenses. Click here to donate.
