SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Authorities are bringing back the no-questions-asked gun buyback program to North County.

People can anonymously hand their unwanted guns to authorities in San Marcos on Saturday and in return receive Walmart gift cards ranging from $50 to $150 depending on the item.

More than 1,200 guns have been collected at ‘Guns for Gift Cards’ events in central San Diego for the last five years.

The buyback event is scheduled for Saturday at 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the San Marcos Sheriff’s Station at 182 Santar Place.

Anyone participating should place the unloaded firearms in the trunks of their cars. A uniformed deputy or officer will give instructions at the location. All weapons collected will be destroyed.

The event is being held in partnership with Oceanside, Carlsbad, Cal State San Marcos, CHP, Escondido, Palomar College Police, as well as the District Attorney’s Office.

Most of the weapons will be destroyed, but there are exceptions.
