SAN DIEGO – A mother and her daughter died Thursday in a head-on crash involving a pair of SUVs on state Route 125 in Chula Vista, a friend of the women told FOX 5.

According to the California Highway Patrol, an SUV being driven in the northbound lane of state Route 125 at San Miguel Ranch Road crossed over the center divider around 10:15 a.m. and collided with a southbound SUV. The two vehicles came to rest in the far left southbound lane.

Two women were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of a Yukon was taken to a hospital with serious injuries, according to a firefighter at the crash site.

One of the women was celebrating her 29th birthday Thursday, according to highway patrol officer.

The onramp from state Route 54 to the 125 was closed in both directions to accommodate the investigation.
