SAN DIEGO -- City utility crews are working to repair a broken water main that flooded traffic lanes in the area of West Morena Boulevard and Savannah Street in the Morena district, according to San Diego police.

A second water line ruptured in the 1500 block of Morena Boulevard, a few blocks from the site of the first, an SDPD spokesman said.

A third rupture was reported just blocks away from the second at the intersection of Morena Boulevard and West Morena Boulevard. City water officials said they believe the abrupt change in water pressure caused by the first rupture caused the next rupture, which in turn caused the third break. They also believe a fourth water line failure that happened at about noon on Interstate 8 near Hotel Circle was related to the ruptures along Morena Boulevard.

Morena Pet Hospital officials say employees sheltered in place due to standing water around the building.  They said the animals were currently safe and dry inside the pet hospital.

City officials said customers should have water service by 5:30 p.m. Friday.
