SAN DIEGO — A contractor crew inadvertently ruptured an underground water line in the Gaslamp District Friday, leaving commercial buildings along a stretch of a downtown street without plumbing service pending repairs.

The construction accident occurred about 10:30 a.m. on Sixth Avenue, near J Street, according to the San Diego Public Utilities Department.

The resulting surge of water inundated the roadside but caused no reported structural flooding. It took crews about an hour to get the overflow halted, city spokesman Arian Collins said.

The 400 block of Sixth Avenue was expected to remain without water service into the late afternoon, Collins said.
