EL MONTE, Calif. — Emergency crews pulled two women to safety after they were found trapped in the rushing waters of the San Gabriel River near South El Monte Friday morning.

The people were trapped on an island in the middle of the river near the 60 Freeway, a Los Angeles County Fire Department spokesman at the scene told KTLA.

The spokesman initially described the people as a man and a woman in their 40s, but later said both were women.

Two helicopters that were assigned to help with the rescue had to be canceled due to the weather, the spokesman said.

Video from the scene showed crews unloading a raft from atop one of the emergency vehicles and taking toward the river.

About 7:45, helicopters returned to the scene and a crew member was lowered down to the river.

Moments later, one of the trapped women was pulled up to the helicopter along with the crew member.

The helicopter remained overhead as crews prepared to pull the second woman to safety.

Video showed her being lifted into the helicopter about 8 am.

There was no immediate word on their conditions.
