RIVERSIDE, Calif. – One of three construction workers died Monday after they were swarmed by bees in Riverside.

The crew was working behind a McDonald’s restaurant in the 5200 block of Van Buren Boulevard just before 10 a.m. Monday when the bees swarmed around them, according to City of Riverside Fire Department.

The workers were in a field when they came across an underground bee hive and were swarmed, according to the report.

Three patients were hospitalized, including two in critical condition and one with minor injuries, according to fire officials.  Later in the day, one of the workers died, KTLA reported.

The bees were “docile” and returned to their hive shortly after the attack, the Fire Department stated.

Vector control investigators were called to the scene, and a private bee company was also requested by the construction contractor.
