Driver suffers broken neck after crash with drunken red-light runner, cops say

SAN DIEGO — A collision in Palm City Thursday sent a 50-year-old man to the hospital with a broken neck and left a suspected drunken driver facing charges.

A 26-year-old woman was driving eastbound on Palm Avenue at about 1:45 a.m. when she ran a red light and smashed into a Nissan Frontier who was turning onto Palm from Satturn Boulevard on a green light. The Nissan rolled and went down a roadside embankment, according to San Diego police .

The man was taken to the hospital, but there was no information on his current condition.

Police arrested the woman on suspicion of felony driving under the influence.

The crash prompted authorities to close eastbound Palm Avenue between Saturn Boulevard and Interstate 5. Delimitros said a traffic alert would likely remain in effect until about 6:30 a.m.
