CHULA VISTA, Calif. - The city of Chula Vista Tuesday became the latest community in the county to turn its back on marijuana cultivation and dispensaries.

In a unanimous decision, the City Council voted to retain its right to regulate the cultivation of marijuana, effectively blocking any effort to open dispensaries in the future.

It was more of a legal maneuver, but stirred a lot of passion on both sides of the issue.

Medical marijuana proponent Cynara Velasquez disagrees with the decision.

“We would want legal dispensaries,” Velasquez said. “It would allow for safe access for patients. The city could recoup money, have enforcement action and decide where dispensaries are placed.”

Other residents implored council members to deny marijuana dispensaries from opening in Chula Vista, citing skepticism of the plant’s medicinal value.
