SAN DIEGO — A California Highway Patrol officer purposefully rammed a hit-and-run suspect’s car during an early morning pursuit Wednesday in the South Bay, authorities said.
It happened around 1:30 a.m. when a law enforcement officer spotted a black Mitsubishi Eclipse going the wrong way on a Chula Vista street, CHP Officer Tommy Doerr said. Police believed the Eclipse may have been involved in a previous hit-and-run collision in Chula Vista, he said.
The driver refused to pull over, instead speeding away and heading southbound on Interstate 5 from J Street, Doerr said. Police chased the car as it exited the freeway at Coronado Avenue and continued on surface streets through San Diego’s Otay Mesa West neighborhood.
At Del Sol Boulevard and Otono Street, a CHP officer in a marked SUV purposefully collided with the Eclipse, a strategic crash designed to end the chase, and the driver was arrested without further incident, Doerr said.
His name and booking information were not immediately available.
