A suspected DUI driver who led authorities on a chase and then a four-hour standoff in Compton was finally taken into custody late Thursday afternoon.
The pursuit began as an attempted traffic stop shortly before noon in the area of Lime Street and Rosecrans Avenue where the authorities say the driver of the white pickup truck failed to yield.
The driver eventually ended up in a dead end on Poplar Street next to a wash with deputies behind him and nowhere to go.
Aerial video from Sky5 showed deputies make several attempts to get the driver out of the pickup. At times, he leaned out of his window and appeared to be communicating with deputies, but he never fully surrendered.
He also tried to back into a sheriff’s vehicle, burning rubber but going nowhere.
Throughout the standoff, the suspect appeared to be vaping and inhaling fumes from a large canister. The contents of the tank were not immediately known, officials said.
Deputies helped residents of a nearby home evacuate safely.
Around 5:30 p.m., a drone was flown in to distract the driver before deputies tossed tear gas canisters into the truck, forcing the suspect to finally escape by tumbling out of the driver’s side window.
After landing on the ground, he appeared to begin fleeing on foot before getting down on his knees and surrendering. Authorities surrounded the suspect and took him into custody.
His name was not immediately released.
