SAN DIEGO — Gubernatorial candidates discussed education, gun reform and more at a forum held in San Diego Sunday morning.

In the debate, the two Republican candidates rejected any policies that might make it difficult for law-abiding people to obtain certain types of firearms, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported, while the Democrats voiced support for gun control measures.

The event, held at the Town and Country Resort and Conference Center from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., was free to the public and attendees were encouraged to ask questions.

The candidates who participated included:

  • John Cox (Republican) San Diego Business Executive
  • Delaine Eastin (Democrat) Former State Superintendent of Public Instruction
  • Antonio Villaraigosa (Democrat) Former Mayor, City of Los Angeles
  • Travis Allen (Republican) Member, California State Assembly

Notable by his absence was state Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom, who recent polls show to be a strong front-runner in the race. Those same polls placed San Diego’s John Cox in second place, ahead of Villaraigosa.

State Treasurer John Chiang was also absent.
