SANTEE, Calif. -- A broken water main spilled thousands of gallons of water onto a busy Santee road.

A recycled water pipe burst on Mission Gorge Road, causing the water to inundate the major thoroughfare.

Mission Gorge Road between Fanita Drive and Carlton Hills Boulevard was partially closed as crews worked through the night to repair the broken pipe. By noon, two lanes were open in both directions.

The pipe is part of the recycled water system, and the pipe itself is relatively new. That water is mainly used for irrigation, so no homes or businesses were affected. Recycled water service was expected to be restored by the end of the day.

Road paving is expected to last until Thursday.

The cause of the rupture was still being investigated.
