LA JOLLA, Calif. – A fire that charred brush in a La Jolla canyon Friday afternoon was an accidental blaze started in a homeless encampment, the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department confirmed.

Firefighters battled the fire in a canyon off the 5400 block of Caminito Bayo, east of La Jolla Mesa Drive in La Jolla, according to SDFD.

The blaze, which grew to at least a quarter-acre, did not pose a threat to the nearby homes, fire officials said. SDFD helicopters were seen using air drops to combat the flames.
