SAN DIEGO – An 8-year-old boy who drowned at a community pool in Mission Valley over the weekend was identified Monday.

The family of Brandon Reynoso identified the child who was found face down in the pool at the Del Rio apartment complex at 2228 Fenton Parkway near Rio San Diego Drive around 8 p.m. Sunday.

An off-duty lifeguard performed CPR until police and paramedics arrived and took him to Rady Children’s Hospital, according to San Diego police Sgt. Tom Sullivan. Reynoso was pronounced dead at the hospital at 10:30 p.m.

Reynoso’s 73-year-old grandfather lost consciousness during the commotion and had to be transported to a hospital also, according to Sullivan.

The boy was swimming in the pool wearing a mask and snorkel, while numerous people were having a party in the area, Sullivan said.

The identities of the boy and his grandfather were not released by authorities and it was not clear why child abuse detectives took over the investigation.

Reynoso’s family gathered at a home on 39th street Monday to try to sell food to raise money for his funeral. An online fundraiser has also been set up to help pay for costs.
