SAN DIEGO — A bomb squad was called out to San Diego’s Encanto neighborhood Monday afternoon to investigate a suspicious device that turned out to be harmless, authorities said.

A grenade canister was reported around 2:30 p.m. on 63rd Street, near Imperial Avenue, police said. Officers evacuated nearby homes as a precaution.

After the bomb squad took an X-ray of the device, they determined it was not a grenade and deemed it to be safe. Residents were then allowed to return to their homes.
